Urban class group
The various urban class groups are :
- Towns
- Urban Agglomeration (UA)
- Out Grouths (OG)
- Metropolitan cities
- Mega cities
- Boom towns and Niche cities
1. Towns
Towns are defined as places that satisfy the following criteria:
- Minimum population of 5000.
- At least 75% of male working population engaged in non-agricultural pursuits.
- Density of population at least 400 persons per km2.
2. Urban Agglomeration (UA)
- Urban agglomeration occurs when two or more adjacent urban areas agglomerate to form larger urban area having population more than 20000 as per census 2001.
3. Out Growths (OG)
- An out growths is a viable unit such as a hamlet or village and clearly identifiable in terms of its location and boundaries.
4. Metropolitan cities
- Metropolitan cities is a large city with population in excess of 1 million (10 lakhs) and may consists of a number of suburban areas attached to a core city centre.
5. Mega cities
- Mega cities occurs when two or more metropolitan cities lie adjacent to eachother forming a continuous urban agglomeration.
- Usually mega cities have population more than 10 millions.
6. Boom towns and Niche cities
- Although the boom towns and niche cities are quite small in terms of population, income and spending as compared to mega cities, their rate of growth is definitely higher.
